We are a group of three families, each with a child who has dyslexia. We’ve joined together to start a non-profit secondary school for students who have dyslexia. What most people don’t know is that research is saying that as many as 15 -20% of the population has mild to severe dyslexia. However, it is under-diagnosed and poorly dealt with in most schools. Because all of us have spent countless hours worrying over our children’s futures, we decided, with the help of some experts in the field of dyslexia and education, to start the Worthy School of Austin. It is our goal to empower these kids to know that they are worthy- worthy to learn, worthy to succeed, worthy to go to college or pursue their dreams, worthy to become anything they want.
Among the founding families is Miles Fain, the principal for the School for the Blind; Anne Fain, a former teacher; Mike Pedneau, a computer engineer; Randa Pedneau, a former teacher and dyslexia specialist; Frank Perdichizzi, a motivational speaker and small business owner; and Kathryn Perdichizzi, a member of the administrative staff at HPBS. Our Advisory Council is made up of Dr. Pat Sekel, a multi-time recipient of Who is Who in Education, a recognized expert on dyslexia, and founder of the Dyslexia Resource Center; Dr. Frank, a professor and author of The Secret Life of the Dyslexic Child; and Karon Law a former principal of a private school in Austin. We have also formed a partnership with Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic to gain access to a number of resources beneficial to students with dyslexia. Among these resources are audio recordings of grade level text books, research materials, and novels which will be used in the classrooms.
